Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, CF Pacific Centre has a large urban footprint. Each day, a current of humanity flows through its polished corridors—shoppers, office professionals, and tourists contributing to the urban energy. Maintaining the safety of this environment is the intricate work of Cadillac Fairview’s (CF) Security & Life Safety team, led by Senior Manager, Brent Findley.
For Brent and his team, the role extends far beyond traditional security concerns like property crime or shoplifting and is focused on proactive safety measures and thoughtful problem-solving to ensure everyone who enters the property feels at ease. This work involves a dedicated team, that includes Security – focused on physical security, access control, surveillance, and liaising with police – and Fire and Life Safety, which handles fire code inspections, occupational health & safety programs, and health and safety committees.
"What I enjoy most in my role is emergency preparedness training," Brent shares. His team runs drills for emergency scenarios that may never materialize and includes collaboration with the Vancouver Police Department's emergency operations team.
"I enjoy doing tabletop exercises and running people through scenarios to prepare them for things that could happen." The true reward for Brent comes from seeing the real-world impact of this training. He often hears from individuals who, having gone through their programs, later recount how the lessons helped them avoid injury in their personal lives. His team doesn’t just provide training; they actively aim higher, with plans that proactively address client safety concerns within and beyond property boundaries to help bring peace of mind.
Within CF Pacific Centre itself, seamless collaboration with property management, retail clients, and office users is essential to maintain a consistently safe and secure environment for all daily visitors. Brent also regularly connects with teams at other CF properties and even with other organizations, guided by the principle that health and safety knowledge and best practices should be shared.
For those considering a career in security, the learning opportunities at CF are more extensive than one might expect. Security & Life Safety is a dynamic, multi-faceted discipline deeply integrated into every aspect of its vibrant retail and office properties. It extends beyond visible security presence to encompass comprehensive occupational health & safety programs, robust emergency management, and proactive life safety programs. This involves ensuring building systems are compliant, meticulously planning for unexpected events, and fostering a culture of inclusion and wellbeing for thousands of daily guests and clients through a continuous balance of routine oversight and agile response.
As a leader, Brent is proud to share his expertise with his reports and the teams they work with, watching them grow and even move on to other roles in the community, including police officers and firefighters. He has cultivated an environment where a job in security can serve as a launchpad—a testament to the profound evolution of a profession that now demands expertise, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to the people it serves.
"CF Pacific Centre has become known as a place where if you're looking to become a manager, we're a good training ground for you," he explains, highlighting the diverse security and life safety experiences
This commitment to professional growth connects to CF's purpose of "Transforming Communities for a Vibrant Tomorrow," as every safety measure contributes directly to the wellbeing and success of the communities CF serves. It's a unique opportunity to build a meaningful career while making a tangible impact on urban life.
